Bandwidth shopper’s checklist: T1, DS3, OC3 and beyond.

May 5th, 2009 · No Comments

After helping 100’s of people with their bandwidth needs over the years, I have devised a short-checklist of things to have when getting a new line. Some of them, may seem obvious, but others are not. Take a look:

Bandwidth shopper’s checklist

Price: Must fit your budget and must be able to show CFO that price is very competitive.

Reliability: Must have carrier that is top rated by independent 3rd party regarding:
1. Latency
2. Packet Loss
3. Reachability

If network redundancy is required must have cost effective way of providing it.

Must have competent and complete support available 24/7.

Specificity of solution: Must have access to a qualified technical engineer to provide technical and network solution options.

Must have an industry professional look at the total communication needs of the company and create a unified cost efficient solution. Notice that I wrote, “industry professional” and not “telecom salesperson.” Look, there are a number of excellent and competent salespeople out there, but it helps to have someone who is competent AND has access to rates and service from a variety of line providers. As many of my customers have found out, one size does not fit all when dealing with data lines.

Versatility of a T1

February 24th, 2009 · No Comments

Analog lines: enables each individual to have a direct line. Can be used with analog phones or key system.

Trunk: allows you to leverage the capabilities of your PBX by oversubscribing extentions

DID/DOD: provides external caller with the ability to reach an internal PBX extention directly, by passing the receptionist. Traffic can be designated to be inbound, outbound or bi-directional

Can give both voice and data over the same circuit and provides the customers with guaranteed bandwidth. Which offers superior reliability and thru put.

PRI T1

February 15th, 2009 · No Comments

A ISDN-PRI circuit is needed when caller ID with name is desired. Integrated service digital network primary rate interface. 23 64 Kbps B(Bearer) channels and one 64 Kbps D(Data) channel (23B + D), which is equivalent to the 24 channelsĀ of a T1 line. The advantage of the D channel is that it sends control signals that can dynamically allocate any number of B channels for different applications. DIDs in blocks are associated with PRI, along with caller ID. Requires a phone system that has a PRI T1 card.

T1 Quote

A T1 provides 24 channels. Each channel can be used to provide you with a voice line. The remaining channels that aren’t needed for voice can be combined (each one provides up to 64K of bandwidth) for data. This can replace several POTs lines and possible reduce your data costs as well. Email us for a quote.

T1

February 15th, 2009 · No Comments

A single T1 could potentially replace up to 24 POTs lines. Businesses can use the T1 for local and outbound LD service. Sometime businesses that make a large volume of LD calls use a T1 for outbound LD only. Businesses will pay lower rates for local usage and LD when this usage is carried over a T1
