After helping 100’s of people with their bandwidth needs over the years, I have devised a short-checklist of things to have when getting a new line. Some of them, may seem obvious, but others are not. Take a look:
Bandwidth shopper’s checklist
Price: Must fit your budget and must be able to show CFO that price is very competitive.
Reliability: Must have carrier that is top rated by independent 3rd party regarding:
1. Latency
2. Packet Loss
3. Reachability
If network redundancy is required must have cost effective way of providing it.
Must have competent and complete technical support available 24/7. Let’s be blunt here: In a world that doesn’t sleep and with technical support resources all over the world, there simply is no excuse for limited tech support. If your line goes down at 2 am - so what - it’s 2pm in India or Australia, so your line provider should be able to hire someone around the clock. Don’t settle for less.
Specificity of solution: Must have access to a qualified technical engineer to provide technical and network solution options.
Must have an industry professional look at the total communication needs of the company and create a unified cost efficient solution. Notice that I wrote, “industry professional” and not “telecom salesperson.” Look, there are a number of excellent and competent salespeople out there, but it helps to have someone who is competent AND has access to rates and service from a variety of line providers. As many of my customers have found out, one size does not fit all when dealing with data lines.
